Sir, You Have Breast Cancer!
Hearing these words is what made a difference in helping to save lives!
In October of 2008 and after ignoring some basic signs and symptoms for about 4 months, Harvey was officially diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Even though his younger sister had lived with Breast Cancer and three recurrences and had been genetically diagnosed as BRCA2 positive, he was still shocked that, a 54 year old male, could contract this disease.
HIS Breast Cancer Awareness was co-founded by both Harvey and Vicki who are brother and sister, both breast cancer survivors and both carry the BRCA2 genetic mutation.
There are approximately 2600 men diagnosed with this disease each year, however more often men will die from this disease due to a late diagnosis compared to women. Male breast cancer accounts for about 1% of all breast cancers. Although rare, it is often detected later and may cause the cancer to become further progressed and more fatal. Breast cancer in men has the same causes as for women, higher levels of estrogen, family history, genetics, lifestyle or other exposures. Genetics and the mutation of specific genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 can increase the risk. Symptoms of breast cancer in men can be a change or inversion to the nipple, dimpling of the skin, redness, itching of the nipple as well as any type of discharge from the nipple. Breast cancer that has metastasized (spread) to the bones may also produce bone pain at the sites and like other cancers symptoms can include weight loss and weakness.

This ‘giving story’ begins with awareness and education that men can be diagnosed with breast cancer and the support needed so men know they are not alone in the sea of pink.
By creating a nonprofit organization with an informative website when there was no information available online about men with a breast cancer diagnosis, to providing helpful information and support daily, to assisting with the creation of a full length documentary, Pink and Blue: Colors of Hereditary Cancer and writing a book to share one man’s story, Sir, You Have Breast Cancer, HIS Breast Cancer Awareness is helping to save lives and provide support. We're working to decrease the stigma that goes along with a breast cancer diagnosis so more men speak out and can be included in new trial studies. Breast cancer does not care about age or gender!
